Following on from the advanced search features of Google I thought it also worth noting that direct from the search bar there are a whole range of calculations and conversions available.

Obviously there are calculators on most modern devices but as Google is something that is ofter open it can be handy to run some simple calculations that way.

As well as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division it also supports raising to the power using the ^ symbol (e.g. 4^3 to get 4 cubed) and square roots using sqrt command (e.g. sqrt 144 will give 12).

The answers are delivered in a calculator interface right there within Google (also reachable by searching Google Calculator)  which introduces a wider range of functions typically found on a standard calculator.

As well as a basic calculator Google can also hand a wide range of unit conversions, again directly from the search bar.

For an example, if you wanted to know what 4 pints translates to in litres simply type 4 pints in litres into the search bar and you will get the answer in the conversion tool. This is handy as it allows you to swap between units so if instead of litres you would prefer millilitres you can simply change the units. It also gives the formula to show how the conversion is made.

At time of writing the following conversions are available:

  • Area
  • Data Transfer Rate
  • Digital Storage
  • Energy
  • Frequency
  • Fuel Economy
  • Length
  • Mass
  • Plane Angle
  • Pressure
  • Speed
  • Temperature
  • Time
  • Volume

Each selection has numerous units to choose from and as with the calculator, once you’ve typed a conversion in the search bar you are put into a dedicated inline form to make doing the next conversion easy.
